Cavalrymen within the Roman legions were rarely Roman citizens, instead being loyal or subjugated peoples – most often Gauls.

Disciplined, Roman Cavalry were ideal troops to threaten the enemy flanks, charge units pinned by legionaries, or chase down fleeing foes.
