An Italian mathematician, Cassini is best known for his work in the field of astronomy. He discovered that the planet Saturn was surrounded by a series of rings in addition to four moons. Whilst serving as the astronomer to King Louis XIV, he was the first to determine the distance between Earth and Mars which allowed estimations of the dimensions of the Solar System to be made.
