Toy Street Review

Do you want to get a game that you can play with literally anyone? What about a game that takes mere minutes to play a round, but you’ll play game after game after game? What if I told you that That's Not A Hat was one of the cheapest games I had ever bought? What if I also said that I played it 52 times in less than two months?

Gameplay

That's Not A Hat is very simple. You have a deck of cards that have very simple drawings on them. There is a skateboard, a duck, frog, record player, ruler, lamp. Simple line drawings that are quickly named. On the back of each card will be an arrow going either left or right. To start with everyone will get a card and they will turn it “picture side” up and we will go round the ring stating what our card depicts. Once you have gone round twice, all the cards are flipped over and will remain so for the whole game.

The top card of the deck is given as a gift by the first player. They will pass it face down following the direction of the arrow saying “That’s A …”. The player receiving the card can believe them and accept the gift, passing their own card along the arrow direction. If they decide to challenge the player then the card is flipped over and whoever was wrong takes the card face-up in front of them. If you have three cards in front of you, then you have lost the game. Whoever takes the card becomes the first player, they draw a new card from the deck, show everyone and pass this card on. Which is always problematic for me, because by then I likely still have no idea what that card is.

All is fine and dandy until you realise that your short term memory is abysmal and you can’t remember your own card from 2 seconds ago let alone what on Earth anyone else has. There is lots of suspicion as people try to confidently pass a cat off as a donut. The whole group will descend into utter hysterics as the cards move quicker ad you brains become more and more addled. This is a party game that anyone can play and I would wager that no one will get it right all the time.

Artwork And Components

This is a super basic game, but it has a bright pink box with a simple and sleek graphic design that appeals to my eyes. It is a cheap game, but it does not give off the aura of cheap. Instead these are thick premium stock cards with clean graphics and bright colours. The box is small and perfectly contains the stack of cards whilst not being so small that it gets lost on a shelf. This is a perfect size to chuck into your bag or pocket for when the need arises, and let me tell you that thai game will be well received with any group.

Round Up

If you are looking for game that offers huge value and is suitable for all the family then I truly believe that you cannot go wrong with That’s Not a Hat. This game is simple, and quite frankly has absolutely no business being as fun as it is! But here we are!
