The trenchers themselves are usually armed with gobber-made smoke pots called hazers and bayonet-tipped rifles. The smoke pots, when broken open, emit a thick grey haze of smoke accompanied with a pungent odour that is better left unquestioned as to its origins. Trenchers get out there and make life hell for the enemy, sometimes by throwing themselves out of their holes at them with blades flashing and rifles roaring. They don’t go out wanting to be heroes, but they’ve been honoured as such more often than not (usually at burial time).
