Sometimes it can be tricky to tempt our kids to get on with their school or homework, with some subjects being more daunting than others. Maths anxiety is common among school age children (and adults!), especially for those still in primary education. It is important to meet this fear with understanding as sometimes it can lead to refusal to even do maths works.

This is why, here at Toy Street, we like to encourage learning with the element of fun. Our maths games can spark an interest in the subject, develop skills, and even, under the guise of a game, get math fearers in touch with the topic.

Without further ado, we present our top 5 maths games. We hope these excellent activities can prevent tears and tantrums, and provide a lot of fun!

1. First Times Tables

Introduce a times table novice to their 2s, 5s, and 10s with this pancake filliping, fun-packed game! The aim of the game is to stack the most pancakes, only catch is you have to do this in a specific sequence..you guessed it, 2s, 5s, or 10s!

In the box is 30 pancake cards, 4 place setting boards, 1 card spatula, 1 spinner board, 1 two-part plastic spinner, 3 number line boards, 1 instruction leaflet. All this for only £5.59! And of course, the priceless maths knowledge that comes with it.

2. Time Tables Heroes

Got a fan of superheroes in the family? We present to you, Time Tables Heroes. Players will need to defeat the evil unicorns, outwit the zombies, and even escape the giant slugs! And they do this with their multiplication skills.

The game ends with a quickfire round of bingo. Using the cards and spinners from the board game, players race to be the first to get 3 in a row. This will be especially helpful for encouraging children to recall their times tables quickly. Times Tables Heroes is designed to help parents and children prepare for the multiplication tables check (MTC), which is required nationwide in primary schools for children in Year 4 from June 2020.

3. BrainBox My First Maths

This game has been developed by an experienced primary school teacher. With all the knowledge of what works and what doesn’t for teaching Key Stage 1 students, BrainBox My First Maths piques interest in the subject using basic mathematical concepts, including numbers, shapes, and measurement. The aim of the game is to collect the most points by the end of the game!

4. Mammoth Maths

So perhaps your little one isn’t a maths fanatic, but they’re pretty passionate about history? This is the game for them. Fun-filled and prehistoric, Mammoth Maths combines maths with a board game where players play as a caveman. How do you move around the board? Answering sums!

This game gives players the motivation to calculate sums with the intention of moving around the board the quickest and winning the game! Ideally for children aged 5-8, older and younger siblings can get involved with this one.

5. Add & Subtract Abacus

We all learn in different ways and while schools can find it hard to cater to everyone’s needs in the classroom, at home you can definitely choose an option that suits your little mathematicians! Visual aids are especially helpful for those who struggle with maths. The Add & Subtract Abacus provides interactive stimuli with its colourful wooden balls and rainbow frame.
